Board of Education Seeks Applicants: June 30, 2015

The Berkley School District is seeking applicants for an open seat on the Board of Education. The position is vacant with the passing of Paul Ellison on June 24, 2015, following his courageous battle with cancer.

 

Mary Jo Israel, Berkley Board of Education President, stated, “Mr. Ellison was elected to a six-year term in November 2011, and most recently served as Board trustee. While our hearts are heavy with Mr. Ellison’s passing, we have a responsibility to fill the vacant Board position within 30 days.” The new Board trustee will serve until the next general election in November 2016.

 

Applications for the position are being accepted until Thursday, July 9 at 5 pm. Interviews for the selected candidates will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at 7 pm, and the new trustee will be appointed and sworn in that same evening. The appointed member will begin his/her term at the next scheduled Board meeting which is currently scheduled for August 10, 2015.

 

Applicants for the Board position must be residents of the Berkley School District which includes Berkley, Huntington Woods, and the northern portion of Oak Park. A list of Board member responsibilities and minimum expectations is posted on the District website here.

 

Interested candidates should fill out and submit an online application form, including letter of interest. In addition to completing the application form, interested candidates should forward their resume to Lori Suarez at lsuarez@berkleyschools.org. Applications and resumes must be received by 5 pm on Thursday, July 9.


 

June 25, 2015: Sad News from Berkley Schools

Dear Berkley Schools Community,

 

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I write to you. I received news today that current Board of Education Trustee Paul Ellison has passed away.

 

Paul bravely battled an aggressive form of cancer for over a year. His wife, Cathy, and son, Nick, are in our thoughts, hearts and prayers as they experience this difficult time.

 

Paul was a fierce Berkley Schools advocate. He was initially elected to the Board in May of 2006. His tenure with the Board included four years as Board President. He achieved the Level 4 Master Board Member award by taking Michigan Association of School Board classes, totaling 435 hours of professional development.

 

Paul served on various committees through the Oakland County School Board Association as well. Most recently he was on the legislative committee. Paul took his responsibility as a Board member seriously attending conferences, taking Board member classes and keeping abreast of school legislative issues. He was well known in Oakland County and the state for his leadership and dedication.

 

Recently, Mr. Ellison said, “I absolutely enjoy every aspect of Board service and remain very proud of the critically important work this Board has accomplished together.”

 

Mr. Ellison will be deeply missed, and his legacy on the Berkley Board of Education will be felt for years.

The School Board Members are trustees primarily charged with the vision, budget, goals and policy for all children in the district. Any operational or staffing issues should be directed first to the person most able to address the problem (e.g. the teacher or building principal).  If the issue has not been resolved at the building level then contact the appropriate central office administrator.
