 Fight School Cuts
Please take a moment to see how Governor Snyder's budget will impact your local school district. It's time to draw a line in the sand and send the message that we won't tolerate these cuts. This budget isn't shared sacrifice — it's forcing our children to pay the price for sloppy government and poor decisions.

Budget talk on our Idea Spot
Berkley Budget : On April 25, the Superintendent presented the potential impact of the Governor`s proposal to the Berkley Schools community. This is a forum to share your thoughts and ask questions regarding the 2011 - 2012 Berkley Schools Budget.

Calling the Governor's current budget proposal a "catastrophe for education" is not overstating its seriousness.  We will not be able to get through this without directly impacting classrooms and programs.

Possible or Likely Reductions Ahead
Staffing Impact

• Salary and benefit cost concessions sought

• Administrative reductions (Burton, BHS, Administrative Offices)

• Paraeducator, Secretarial and Lunch Aide changes

Classroom Impact/Program Elimination
At least 40 teacher layoffs:

• The loss of great people is our greatest concern

• Class sizes increased

• Split grade classes created with high class sizes

• BHS block scheduling eliminated

• Specials Classes (Art, Music, PE, Media) reduced or eliminated

• Elective Classes reduced at Berkley High School

• Counselor position reduced

• Again, the teachers on our layoff list represent a tremendous investment and therefore loss to our District and our students

Teacher Aides eliminated (15 positions)

In all, potential for 55+ staff on layoff list
