The Facilities and Operations Department is responsible for providing a safe and clean environment that is conducive to learning.
Our skilled custodial and maintenance staff is responsible for such things as disinfecting, maintaining heating systems, ensuring water quality, providing cleaning services, grounds upkeep, building automation for energy management, capital projects assistance and security.
The school district is looking for permanent and substitute custodians to work days and afternoons. Berkley is a great district to work in, with a professional and friendly custodial team and renovated buildings. Berkley School District Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) - 2025 Notification
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that each year, district workers and building occupants receive notification about asbestos activities such as response actions and inspections. The purpose of this correspondence is to meet those requirements and familiarize you with the asbestos related activities that have been conducted in Berkley School District during the past year.
MANAGEMENT PLANS
In 1988, Berkley School District contracted with an environmental firm to conduct inspections for asbestos containing material (ACM) within all district owned buildings. This information was then compiled into Asbestos Management Plans. These Management Plans are located in the administrative office of each building and are available for review. A copy of each building management plan is also located in the Administration Building.
SURVEILLANCE ACTIVITIES
The AHERA regulation requires surveillance of the condition of ACM every six months and Reinspections every three years. The next periodic surveillance will be conducted in September 2024. The last Reinspection was conducted in March 2024, the next Three-Year Reinspection will be conducted in 2026. ASBESTOS ABATEMENT
Berkley School District has conducted minor asbestos abatement within its various facilities in the last year. The removal/repair projects were performed by Michigan Licensed Asbestos Abatement Contractors and managed by Nova Environmental, Inc., the district’s environmental consulting firm.
All documentation regarding these projects is available for your review in each building file and at the Administration Building. Air tests were conducted throughout all phases of the asbestos removal/repair at each building. The air samples were collected and analyzed in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements. The result of the air tests at each of the projects were well within the limits established by the governing agencies.

Building Blocks
Built in 1951, the Berkley Building Blocks Early Childhood Center (formerly Tyler and later Avery Elementary) services the entire District's young student population. At 42,988 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 1,013. One and a half custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility.
Administrative Offices
Built in 1965 as the Tyndall Elementary / Center, the District's recently renovated administration building occupies 24,516 square feet and has an occupancy load of 578. One half-time custodian is tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining twelve average size homes each night).
Angell Elementary
Built in 1921, Angell Elementary services the north central student population. At 44,426 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 996. Three custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining twenty-two average size homes each night).
Burton Elementary
Built in 1925, Burton Elementary services the southeast student population. At 53,667 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 1,740. Three custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining twenty-seven average size homes each night).
Pattengill Elementary
Built in 1925, Pattengill Elementary services the northwest student population. At 47,437 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 1,140. Three custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining twenty-four average size homes each night).
Rogers Elementary
Built in 1952 (formerly Hamilton Elementary), Rogers Elementary services the east central student population. At 45,537 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 1,073. Three custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining twenty-three average size homes each night).
Anderson Middle School
Built in 1956, Anderson Middle School services the central student population. At 95,034 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 1,651. Three custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining forty-eight average size homes each night).
Norup International School
Built in 1956, Norup International School services the central student population. At 97,789 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 1,699. Three custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining forty-nine average size homes each night).
Berkley High School
Built in 1949, Berkley High School services the entire student population. At 228,326 square feet, the building has an occupancy load of 4,005. Eight custodians are tasked with cleaning and maintaining the facility (the equivalent of cleaning and maintaining one-hundred and fourteen average size homes each night).
Berkley Schools Custodial Maintenance Team uses a safety data sheet database for the 72 chemical products that are currently used for cleaning by the school district. A reminder that no cleaning products can be brought in and used in the District unless approved by the facilities team. Custodial personnel have been instructed to confiscate any such items found.
At the beginning of the school year, student accident insurance brochures are distributed to all families via the Back to School Online Packet.
The District provides insurance through Student Assurances for student injury medical costs not covered by the individual family's independent insurance company. If your child becomes injured during the school day and requires medical attention, the school office will have the necessary form for the parent to complete for filing a claim. Any receipts for costs you incur not covered by your family insurance due to the injury must be submitted and you will be reimbursed by Student Assurances. Please be sure to look for this information at the beginning of each school year. Also included in the brochure is information on how to purchase additional 24 hour insurance coverage for a nominal fee.
