Student Code of Conduct

Our Commitment to a Safe, Supportive, and Inclusive School Community

In the Berkley School District, we believe every student deserves a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This Student Code of Conduct reflects our shared values and our commitment to fostering a positive school culture built on respect, kindness, fairness, and belonging for all.

This is a guide to help us create a community where students are encouraged to make thoughtful choices, take responsibility for their actions, and grow through learning and repair, not just punishment. While some behaviors require specific consequences under District policy or state law, our approach prioritizes restorative practices, like conversations, circles, and opportunities to repair harm, alongside fair and progressive responses that fit the situation.

Creating this culture is a collective effort. Students, families, staff, and community members all play an important role in shaping our schools. We believe students should have opportunities to lead, contribute, and help teach expectations to younger peers. We also want every student to know where to turn for help, whether to a teacher, counselor, social worker, or other trusted adult.

We encourage families to read this Student Code of Conduct together and to see it as part of our shared purpose: to inspire, empower, and lead all learners to realize their full potential and make a positive difference in their future and community.

Together, we are building schools where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued every day.

When and Where the Student Code of Conduct Applies

This Student Code of Conduct is focused on helping students understand the impact of their choices, repairing harm when it occurs, and ensuring that consequences, when needed, are fair, consistent, and designed to support learning and growth.

This Code applies in all situations where student conduct impacts the school community, including:

  • On school grounds before, during, and after school hours.
  • On school-related transportation.
  • At school-sponsored activities and events, whether on or off campus.
  • When traveling to or from school or school-related activities.
  • When a student is using school technology networks, accounts, or other district services, regardless of location.
  • In certain off-campus situations, including online, where conduct may cause substantial disruption at school or impact the safety and well-being of students or staff.

The Student Code of Conduct was updated in 2026 by the Berkley Schools Administrative team along with input from students, teachers, and parents/guardians.

Purpose of the Student Code of Conduct

The Student Code of Conduct serves three important purposes:

  • To outline the rights and responsibilities of all students.
  • To set clear expectations for behavior that supports a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
  • To prevent actions or activities that interfere with the school program or are prohibited by law, while providing opportunities for growth and restoration when mistakes happen.
