AMS Students Host Constitutional Convention

AMS Students Host Constitutional Convention

During the week of October 20, Anderson 8th graders in Mrs. Currie and Mr. Mustonen's US History classes participated in a Constitutional Convention. Each student took on the role of a Framer (delegates who drafted the U.S. Constitution at the Constitutional Convention) and learned about their background and role at the Convention. Next, they met with their state delegation and discussed what needed to be resolved to strengthen the Federal Government and correct the problems with the Articles of Confederation. Then students were assigned to a committee and did research to explain a compromise, plan or function of the Constitution. These included:

  • Federalism
  • Checks and Balances
  • New Jersey Plan
  • Virginia Plan
  • Great Compromise
  • 3/5 Compromise
  • Tribal Nations

Finally, students presented their findings at the Convention. The proceedings were overseen by "George Washington" and each class voted to ratify the final document. This activity is part of the Creating a New Government unit of study. Students will continue to make connections as they move through the debate over ratification and Bill of Rights.

Mrs. Currie shared, “Students take an interest in their particular ‘Framer’ and this connection helps foster their curiosity about the roles of historical figures while strengthening their understanding of the Constitution.”
