AMS Students Tour the DIA to Learn About Hispanic Art

AMS Students Tour the DIA to Learn About Hispanic Art

On October 17, the Anderson Middle School Introduction to Spanish classes had the opportunity to go and explore cultural exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). This year, the students had a guided tour which focused on shaping identity through Hispanic Art. The DIA gallery guides used student-centered activities to facilitate learning about Juan Miro, Diego Rivera, and the DIA’s new piece of artwork by Pablo Picasso. In addition, students viewed the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) ofrendas (a traditional altar, or "offering," set up in homes) to honor and welcome deceased loved ones and made connections with the ofrenda that they created at AMS. Overall, the DIA trip reinforced classroom lessons and gave students a deeper appreciation of the Spanish language and culture.
