BHS Celebrates Sources of Strength Week
During the week of March 2nd, Berkley High School’s Sources of Strength class hosted Sources of Strength Week. Sources of Strength is a leadership class that works on reducing the stigma of mental health struggles and connecting students to the strengths that surround them each day.
Throughout the week, students planned theme days that highlighted some of the strengths on the Sources of Strength wheel.
Monday - Family Support: Students created thoughtful cards for family members, expressing gratitude and appreciation. This activity connected to Family Support by encouraging students to reflect on the important role their families play in providing love, encouragement, and stability.
Tuesday - Positive Friends: Students participated in a fun and lighthearted “awkward” photoshoot with their friends, mimicking the popular “JC Penny Photoshoots” celebrating connectedness. This tied into Positive Friends by highlighting them in a photoshoot.
Wednesday - Mentors: Students completed a bingo sheet by collecting signatures from teachers and staff who support them in different ways, with prizes for the first winners. This activity connected to Mentors by helping students recognize the many trusted adults in their lives who guide, encourage, and support their growth.
Thursday - Generosity: Students shared moments that brought them joy during the week on a hallway mic, which were compiled into a video for the school community. This reflected Generosity by encouraging students to give back through sharing positivity, uplifting others, and spreading joy.
Friday - Healthy Activities: Partnering with YOUth Empowerment, Sources of Strength was able to promote stress relief and creativity, through hands-on slime making. Students participated in making and decorating their slime, along with enjoying lunch with others.
Sources of Strength advisor Susie Sims shared, “This week was a great celebration of connection, kindness and well-being across our school community. From recognizing the support of family and mentors to building positive friendships and sharing joy, each day highlighted an important aspect of student life. The activities brought students together in fun and meaningful ways, reminding us all of the strength that surrounds us, and how to help others.
