Norup Art Students Emulate Contemporary Artist

Norup art teacher Kristen Gustafson makes sure to introduce students to Black, contemporary artists throughout the school year. For Black History Month, Ms. Gustafson taught her students about Kehinde Wiley, an American portrait painter. Mr. Wiley is known for his naturalistic paintings of Black subjects that reference the work of Old Master paintings, including one on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

With her students, Ms. Gustafson shared what Kehinde Wiley does and provided backdrops in the halls for students to interact with and emulate Mr. Wiley’s work with their own photos
