AMS Principal's Weekly Update 10-8-21

Dear AMS Students and Families,
It was a great week at AMS (however it would be nice if we could get a break from all of rain we have been getting)! Last week, I shared a few items of concern regarding students not coming to school with masks and students arriving to school late. I am happy to report that the number of students arriving to school without a mask has decreased significantly since last week to the extent that most days there have been two or less students who arrive to school without a mask. Our morning tardies have improved as well. I would like to thank our parents for their attention to these issues and their support so that students get to school on time with all necessary supplies ready to have a productive day.
Yesterday, I did a walkthrough of our new cafeteria addition and I am happy to share that we are making significant progress. I appreciate everyone's patience, in particular, with regards to the parking lot. I know with all of the machinery and fencing, navigating the parking lot has not been easy, especially during drop-off, pick-up, and Hurley Field events. With the extensive amount of rain we have gotten over the last 2 weeks, it has delayed progress in getting the parking lot portion completed. While the entire project is expected to be wrapped up by early November, we are hopeful the parking lot will be fully opened back up within the next week to two weeks.

Teen Court
Teen Court is a juvenile diversion program through Oakland Country aimed at keeping juveniles out of the court system. The teen defendant is brought to court with same- aged peers serving as the prosecutor and jury in their case. The program is designed around the philosophy that a jury of one's peers is more influential in dealing with behavioral problems than any other method. AMS will be participating in Teen Court this year representing the prosecutor and jury. Any 7th or 8th grade students interested in participating in Teen Court this year must apply to Ms. Combs by today, October 8. Interested students should write a paragraph explaining their definition of "justice." The paragraph can be sent via email to Ms. Combs. Ten students will be selected to serve on Teen Court. Please contact Ms. Combs with any questions. For more information about the Teen Court Program, please click on Oakland County Teen Court.
Lost and Found
Our lost and found continues to grow as the weeks go by. If your child has lost a lunch container, water bottle, clothing item, coat, or any other belongings, please encourage them to check the lost and found located just outside the gym. It is suggested that all lunch containers and water bottles be labeled so if they are lost, we can get lost items back to their owner. If you haven't already done so, please label these items ASAP.
International Trip to Greece in 2023
An international trip for middle school and high school students to Greece has been planned for Spring Break 2023 (changed from February Break 2023). If you are interested in hearing more about this travel opportunity, please plan to attend an informational parent meeting on October 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the AMS Media Center. Families must pre-register for the meeting here If families are unable to attend but are interested in more information, sign up at the above link with the “interested” box. For questions about this trip, please contact Mrs. Troher.
Wheel Chair Needed
AMS is in need of a replacement wheelchair to transport students when they are injured. Our current wheel chair has a bent wheel and does not maneuver very well. If you have a wheel chair or know of someone who has a wheel chair that is no longer needed and you (or they) are willing to donate it, we would greatly appreciate the donation!
AMS Scholastic Book Fair
AMS will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair October 21-27 with a Scholastic Family Event on Wednesday, October 27 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. for families to shop the book fair. Students will be scheduled with their ELA class to listen to a book talk from Mrs. Watson leading up to the book fair. Following the book talks, students will be permitted to shop the book fair during regular school hours. Families are encouraged to use E-Wallet to create a pre-paid account which allows for cashless transactions. For more information about the book fair, please Visit the AMS Book Fair Website or click on AMS Scholastic Book Fair. Volunteers are also needed to help run the AMS Book Fair. All parents/family members volunteering during school-sponsored functions must complete the district Volunteer Release Form prior to any activities. Please keep in mind that the Volunteer Release Form is sent to the Berkley School District Administrative Offices and may take up to two weeks to process so we recommend you submit the required forms well in advance of your planned activity. The Volunteer Release Form must be accompanied with a copy of your valid driver's license or state-issued ID and a copy of your COVID-19 vaccination record. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Ms. Watson or call her at (248) 837-8212.
