AMS Principal's Weekly Update 12-2-22

Dear AMS Students and Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and took the opportunity to reflect on those things for which to be thankful. As parents, we often perceive our child's school experience through the lens of our own school experience. When I think of my school experience, a lot of my classroom memories involve sitting in classes with desks in rows, listening to teachers lecture with minimal peer collaboration. I want to share a few of the unique practices our teachers use to promote an environment that is more student centered, provides greater student engagement, and more inclusive where all students are active participants.
In several of our classes, teachers are using group white boards where students are randomly grouped to collaboratively share their thinking and build an understanding of the concept for the day. Another practice teachers use is chalk talks. During chalk talks, students are given prompts where they silently contribute to the prompt by writing their thoughts collectively on a white board or large paper. These are just a few of the many practices teachers are using which allows for all students to have a voice and leads to deeper learning through discovery. Furthermore, these practices allow for student movement and provide an opportunity for students to hear a variety of perspectives from their classmates.
On Wednesday, 7th grade students participating in Religious Diversity Journeys took their second field trip to the Sikh Society of Michigan. The RDJ Program offers 7th grade students the opportunity to learn first-hand about world religions, their cultures, and places of worship. Wednesday's journey allowed students to learn more about Sikh history, traditions, and culture. The goal of Religious Diversity Journeys is to teach understanding which leads to deep respectful relationships among individuals and congregations of different faiths as well as those who do not have a religious affiliation.

Day in the D End of Year 8th Grade Trip
Each year, 8th graders have the opportunity to participate in an end of year all day activity. Again this year, the end of year 8th Grade activity will be the Day in the D trip which consists of a variety of activities in and around downtown Detroit. This year's Day in the D trip will take place on June 13, 2023 with a cost $176.00 and will include the following activities and amenities listed below. This trip is an all day trip with an anticipated departure from AMS around 8:00 a.m. and return time to AMS around 10:30 p.m. (exact times to be determined as we get closer to the trip).
- Round trip bus transportation
- Tour of Ford Field
- Motown Historical Museum Tour
- Guided Tour of The Parade Company
- Diamond Jack River Cruise along the Detroit River
- Box lunch on Belle Isle (provided)
- Detroit Tigers evening baseball game with fireworks show to follow.
The Day in the D trip is arranged by Student Adventures, the same company that we use to arrange the 8th Grade Washington DC trip and the 7th Grade U.P. Trip. To register and make payments, please visit the Student Adventures Day in the D Trip Webpage and follow the on-screen steps to reserve a spot. We recognize that $176 maybe a hardship for some of our families. For that reason, we are in the process of coordinating a fundraising opportunity for our 8th graders to raise funds so that every 8th grader can participate. We are also looking at other options to offset the cost. Currently, those registering for the Day in the D trip will temporarily be placed on a waiting list until we register an additional 42 students to add a 3rd bus. Once we reach 42 additional registrations, waitlisted registrants will be officially registered. If you have any questions related to the registration process, please contact Student Adventures directly at (877) 873-7550. For all other questions, feel free to contact Day in the D sponsor, Nell Bielecki.
