Norup Principal's Newsletter: 9-28-2021

Norup Principal Newsletter

Dear Norup parents:

Last week was our first full week of school and teachers have been working hard on establishing routine.  We also had our curriculum night virtual presentations and these were fairly well received from the feedback I have received so far.  I left one presentation out on Tuesday last week for elementary parents - here is the access to the elementary media presentation.  Elementary parents - I will also put the links for all the classrooms below in the newsletter.

On the personal front I had another very loaded weekend.  On Saturday we rode our bikes into Midtown and I ate dinner at Ima for the first time - it was super delicious!  We then went to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for a wonderful concert and on our way back we stopped at Beacon Park for DElectricity and had a blast.  On Sunday I watched my beloved Arsenal mens team finally play well for a big win and caught a few minutes of the Arsenal womens match as well (the women are undefeated this season).  I then went to the Lions game and despite the last minute loss it was as usual a lot of fun.  I even ran into some Norup students on my way out.

This week we are hoping to continue establishing routine and getting students into the flow of more normalized school.  Staff are working hard and getting into their grooves as well.  It has not been easy but are continuing to press forward towards more and more normalcy.

As always, thank you for choosing Norup.  We appreciate you and hope that you are all doing well and are staying safe and healthy.  Have a great week everyone!

5th grade fitting night - final information - attention 5th grade parents

This is a reminder that FITTING NIGHT is this Thursday, September 30. Please see below for all the pertinent information.

Who: All district Fifth Graders and their Parents

What: Instrument Fitting Night

When: Thursday, September 30, 2021: Norup International School

*Enter through the west parking lot doors & follow signs

Time: To maintain smaller crowds, families are asked to come at the following times

4:00 – 5:00 Open for all

*Ideally we'd like families to attend Fitting Night during the times listed for each school; however, we understand that families may have another commitment at that time. Therefore, the open time is for those who can't make it during the scheduled time slot.

5:00 – 6:00 Open for students at Burton and Norup

6:00 – 7:30 Open for students at Angell, Pattengill and Rogers

IMPORTANT NOTES

• Students interested in joining Band or Orchestra must attend Fitting Night. Any student who is not fitted at the Fitting Night will have the choice of the remaining instrument(s) needed to balance instrumentation (as determined by the teacher). We work to maintain low class sizes so that each beginner can get as much attention as possible; therefore, balance among the ensembles is watched closely. Once an ensemble has reached its capacity, students will be able to choose from the remaining group(s) still open.

• Fitting Night is an 'open house' format, i.e. you check in upon arrival and freely move from station to station until your child has tried three instruments and checks out at the final station

• To ensure the health and safety of all those attending, there are a variety of protocols that will be in place. ALL in attendance will be required to wear a face mask and to socially distance when traveling throughout the building and  waiting in line. McCourt’s Music (12 Mile in Berkley) will be providing the equipment and staff for the event. In addition to wearing masks and gloves, hand sanitizer will be used before and after students touch the instruments; reeds will be given to students; mouthpieces will be sanitized.

• In an effort to limit crowds, both parents are welcome to attend with their fifth grader; however, please leave others, e.g. siblings, grandparents, at home. Also, students who have absolutely decided to join Choir need not attend.

• If your child already takes private lessons on an instrument, it is not necessary to attend Fitting Night; however, please let your child's music teacher know so she can include him/her in the proper ensemble.

• If your family owns an instrument and your child is considering playing it, please bring it to Fitting Night (1) to ensure it is a good "fit" for your child and (2) so it can be evaluated in terms of its playing condition.

• If your child will be joining Choir, please let his/her elementary general music teacher know so she can include him/her on the class roster.

6th grade activities day this Friday - attention 6th grade parents

6th graders will participate in team building activities on the morning of Friday October 1.  This is our “orientation” so to speak as we have implemented a system where we get to know the students first so we can tailor a team building program to them.  The afternoon will consist of a roller skating field trip for more team building.  Permission slips should be available in the next day or two if you have not gotten them already.
