Anderson 7th Graders Participate in Religious Diversity Journeys

On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, 7th grade students participating in the AMS Religious Diversity Journeys club took their second field trip of the year to the Sikh Society of Michigan. During the field trip students learned about Sikh history, traditions, and culture. As part of the trip, representatives from the Sikh Society demonstrated how to wear the traditional headwear, called a pagri.

Religious Diversity Journeys (RDJ) was established in 2002 by former Berkley teacher Gail Katz in order to help introduce her students to different faiths and cultures, and is offered through the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit. Ms. Katz wanted to create an experience where students could learn about religion and culture in a setting where myths and stereotypes would be dispelled, in conjunction with the lessons of cultural and religious literacy and diversity appreciation as core civic values within Michigan’s 7th grade social studies curriculum in World Religion.
