Board of Education Honors Teachers, Athletes and Scholars at April Board Meeting

At the April 10, 2023 Regular Board Meeting, the Board of Education honored the Berkley Schools Teachers of the Year, the BHS Ski Team, the BHS Wrestling Team, the BHS Girls and Boys Basketball teams and two BHS swimmers.

Teachers of the Year

The Board honored the 2023 Berkley Schools Teachers of the Year:

  • Berkley Building Blocks: Jodi Miller, Early Interventionist, Birth-Age 3
  • Angell: Michelle Hoerner, Kindergarten
  • Burton: Pam Koretz, 5th Grade
  • Norup Elementary & Berkley Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year: Kristi Metz, English Language Development
  • Pattengill: Amy Girvan, 1st Grade
  • Rogers: Jen Rogers, 2nd Grade
  • Anderson & Berkley Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year: Nell Bielecki, Science
  • Norup Middle School: Carole Hoste, Band
  • BHS & Berkley Schools High School Teacher of the Year: Jessica Sandtveit, Math

Ski Team

The BHS Ski Team is combined with Troy Athens. The team was honored for finishing in third place in the state for the 2023 Academic All-State Ski Teams. In addition, junior Jonah Rontal and senior Ben Clous earned the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Scholar Athlete Certificate for holding a 3.5 GPA or higher throughout the season.

Swim Team

Two BHS swimmers were honored at the Board meeting for receiving All-State Academic honors for boys varsity swimming, Chase Warner and Nico Bronzetti. Both were also seniors and captains of the team.

Boys Basketball

The 2022-23 BHS Varsity Boys Basketball Team was honored for achieving All-State academic status as a team for having a combined GPA average over 3.4.

Girls Basketball

The 2022-23 BHS Varsity Girls Basketball Team was honored for achieving All-State academic status as a team for having a combined GPA average over 3.1 for the third year in a row. In addition, two students were honored for receiving a 2023 Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Award from the Basketball Coaches Association of America. Samantha Winthrow and Ava Beard received this award for achieving a cumulative 3.8 GPA and playing four years of high school basketball. Both Samantha and Ava were unable to attend the Board meeting, so Ava’s younger brother accepted the honor on their behalf.

Wrestling Team

The 2022-23 BHS Varsity Wrestling Team was honored for achieving All-State academic status for having a combined GPA average over 3.2. In addition, senior Delani Campbell was honored for qualifying for and competing at the Division 1 State Wrestling Tournament. Delani, who competed in the 175 pound division, lost in the blood round of the state - making it to the final round before placing for medals. In addition, Delani placed third at the Regional meet. During the regular season Delani competed with the boys and participated in the girls tournament at the State level.
