Safe Schools Week: School Resource Officer & Nurse Rose

Safe Schools Week: Nurse Rose & School Resource Officer

Today we’re sharing details about two key positions that help contribute to our staff and students having a safe environment: our School Resource Officer and School Nurse.

Sgt. Dave Arney is the District’s School Resource Officer (SRO). Sgt. Arney, prior to being the District’s SRO, oversaw juvenile investigations, emergency vehicle operations and was a detective for Berkley Public Safety. He also spent a lot of time in our schools as our school liaison officer, conducting walkthroughs, connecting with students, bringing a fire truck and gear for fire safety assemblies and building relationships not only with our students, but also with our administrators. As the Berkley Schools SRO, Sgt. Arney is stationed at Berkley High School. He also visits all our schools on a regular basis, continues to form relationships with our students, attends large District events and will be on site in case of an emergency. Sgt. Arney also sits on the District’s Safety Advisory Committee and helps guide and establish best practices for safety. During the summer months, Sgt. Arney returns to Berkley Public Safety full time.

Rose Guglielmetti is our School Nurse. Nurse Rose’s focus is on health and wellness. She assists families with illness related questions, stays up to date on the latest health department recommendations and works with our administrative team to be proactive on emerging concerns. Nurse Rose also coordinates vaccine clinics for our staff and families. This month, the clinic she organized had over 100 visitors. Nurse Rose spends time with our students as well. For example, she conducts handwashing lessons in our elementary schools, showing students how germs spread and gives talks to middle schoolers about the effects of vaping.

A big project Nurse Rose is working on is establishing cardiac arrest response teams in each school. So far, she has worked with staff to earn the MI Heart Safe School designation for both Berkley High School and Anderson Middle School. The MI HEARTSafe Schools Award Program was developed to help schools prepare for a cardiac emergency. The designation focuses on making sure people can identify cardiac distress, ensuring all AED machines are up to date and easily identifiable in the hallways and reviewing the cardiac emergency response plan.

Tomorrow, our Safe Schools Week message will be testing our communications system. Look and listen for those messages around 6 pm. The email will come from Berkley Schools Communications Office with the sending email of: communications@berkleyschoolsorg.myenotice.com. Please save this email address to your email contacts list. The phone number that will call and text you is: 1-855-504-1667. Please save this phone number so you know we’re messaging you. Even though the message will be recorded, if you say “hello” when the call comes through, the message will play quickly. We know there was a delay in the message delivering in past tests, and while Finalsite works to resolve this issue, answering the phone will help deliver the message to you quicker.
